It is fair to say there has been a mystical revolution throughout the Western world over the last forty years. Whereas mysticism was once uncommon within mainstream society, it has now become accepted and normal. Going by the law of the market, any reasonable person could deduce this from the number of bookshelves devoted to eastern mysticism and New Age thought in virtually all major bookstore outlets (e.g., Barnes and Noble and the now defunct Borders). The Borders bookstore in my hometown in Oregon offered 65 shelves to these subjects; a few decades earlier, B. Dalton bookstore had only five shelves on mysticism. Another indicator of the popularity of mysticism was the success of talk-show host Oprah Winfrey. Over the course of twenty some years, she introduced literally tens of millions of readers and viewers to the mystical life.

Very deceptive in today's churches

I was in contemplative settings and saw the trances and bizarre behavior which is called signs of holiness. The devil hates the human nature which Jesus Christ took on, and which places humans even above the angels - because he is the new Adam, the new head of the human race. Contemplative monks twisted human beings so that the intellect was treated as rubbish where I was. We were never meant to have direct knowing like God, and our intellects work by a reasoning process. If we sideline that reasoning ability, we lose our protection from error and mystical knowing is a very deceptive pursuit. The contemplative lifestyle could actually unhinge people, not lead to knowing God, because we are designed to be socially connected and love for fellow humans teaches us to love. Living in silence does not enhance our relationship with God. He made us the only creatures with speech and language. He himself is the Word, and so he has honoured our ability to speak. Contemplative life is dangerous and unholy. This article addresses a problem seen in our churches today.
